Support Golf Tournament to Cure Cancer

WASHINGTON -- Whether you are a scratch player or a duffer, like so many of those who chase around that small, white dimpled ball on weekends, Howard University Cancer Center (HUCC) invites you to participate in its second annual Swing Fore the Cure Charity Golf Classic May 14.

The event will again be at the beautiful Lake Presidential Golf Club at 3151 Presidential Golf Club Drive in Upper Marlboro, Md.  The club, which opened in 2008, is one of the region’s newest golf courses.

Dr. Wayne Frederick, interim director for HUCC and associate dean for Clinical Strategy and Operations at Howard University College of Medicine, said last year nearly 100 golfers turned out to support the center.

“The support we got from the community was tremendous, particularly considering that it was our first ever tournament,” Frederick said.

The money raised from the event supports cancer research by HUCC and the center’s various outreach efforts, such as free cancer screening and education programs for men and women.

“So, this is a chance to have fun and do good at the same time,” Frederick said.  “Even if you don’t play golf, we want people to come out.  We’ve got something for everybody.  It’s a win-win for everyone involved.”

The Cancer Center has numerous programs, including:

  1. Men Take Ten, in which free prostate screening is offered to men 40 years old or older. Services offered include a digital rectal examination and a blood test for prostate specific antigen. Men are also provided with education materials.

  2. The Rosemary Williams Mammoday Program, during which mammograms are being provided to women who are at least 40 years of age, low income, underinsured or uninsured. All women receive a clinical breast examination and mammogram at no cost. Women are also provided with educational materials.

  3. Project Early Awareness, in which girls in the 10th through 12th grades are taught the skills needed to detect breast cancer early.
